Gate: Thus the Japanese Self-Defense Force Fought There!
ゲート 自衛隊 彼の地にて、斯く戦えり
Gate: Jieitai Kano Chi nite, Kaku Tatakaeri is a Japanese fantasy novel series written by Takumi Yanai and illustrated by Daisuke Izuka and Kurojishi from 2006 and later published by AlphaPolis
Main Story
When a portal from another world appears in Ginza, Tokyo, a legion of soldiers and monsters emerge to attack the city. Thanks to their far more advanced weaponry and tactics, the Japan Self-Defense Forces (JSDF) easily repels the enemy, passes through the gate and establish a forward base of operations to force the Roman-styled empire of the other world to open peace negotiations. Yōji Itami is a JSDF officer sent to investigate the other world, where magic, dragons and elves are real, using his knowledge of fantasy stories to make his way in this new environment.User Reviews
by LachielGate.. unique premise of a other wordly gate pops up in tokyo. Alright kewl modern earth gets invaded by medieval people and.. they end up retreating through the gate.. and thats how we have our story.
The story is smooth, but you should be aware that the author is a die-hard supporter of the JSDF so prepare yourself for some things pointed at other countries with a extremely biased view.
The setting and overall plot is straight forward once you figure it out but you will still find yourself surprised through your reading.

The story is great and we get to read how a modern force of tanks, fighter jets, artillery and modern infantry decimates a medieval army with almost contemptuous ease. The JSDF is shown as an entity that was reluctant to inflict such slaughter, but not hesitant in using their advantages after the attack on Tokyo. The Empire on the other hand seemed to be filled with short-sighted people who do not comprehend the gap in technology, resulting in bloodbaths whenever the two get into a conflict.
Well written and filled with decent characters, much of the criticism from people who disliked the anime lies with the MC who is at the forefront and thus trip over a bevy of fantasy women: a female mage, a forest elf, a dark elf, a demi-goddess. However, they are well-written and their attraction to Itami is a gradual process and somewhat understandable.
I recommend this to >anyone< who likes slice of life with military / Fantasy setting
